The Herald Journal, a leading news source in Logan, Utah, has announced changes to its printing schedule in response to shifting reader habits and economic factors. Beginning the week of October , the paper will print on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, reducing its weekly print days from five to three.

According to city editor Steve Kent, this adjustment will enable his reporters to focus more intently on developing stories and investigating leads, rather than rushing to meet daily deadlines. 'And it's tough to see people leaving the paper,' he lamented, acknowledging the impact of staff reductions on the newsroom.

The Herald Journal is part of Cache Valley Publishing, a group that also owns The Tremonton Leader in northern Utah, The Preston Citizen, and The Montpelier News-Examiner in southern Idaho. All of these papers print once a week on Wednesdays. Adams Publishing Group, which acquired the chain in 2017, operates over 100 community newspapers across the country.

The shift to a reduced printing schedule is part of a broader strategy to adapt to changing reader habits and technological advancements. Kent noted that while circulation numbers have declined, online readership has surged, with a 43.5% increase from last year and 20% growth overall in digital subscribers.

As a result, the paper will no longer require door-to-door carriers, leading to layoffs in this area. However, Kenfield, the paper's general manager, reassured that staff reductions are not currently anticipated, although they may be part of future evaluations.
